A burglar paused to pet a family’s golden retriever before casually taking the owner’s $1,300 electric bike.
In an unexpected twist, a burglar took a break from stealing an electric bike to play with a family’s dog.
This incident left social media users both amused and baffled.
Thief’s unlikely encounter with a golden retriever
The unusual incident unfolded in a San Diego garage, where security footage captured a thief attempting to steal a $1,300 electric bike.
The footage, shared by the San Diego Police Department, shows the burglar entering the brightly lit garage.
Additionally, the individual seems intent on making a quick getaway with the bike.
However, his plans took an unexpected turn when a golden retriever appeared from a side door, catching the burglar’s attention.
Thief’s twist
Instead of fleeing with the stolen bike, the man was immediately charmed by the friendly golden retriever.
He couldn’t resist the dog’s adorable demeanor and paused his crime to play with the pet.
Then, he set the bike’s stand down, crouched to the ground, and began petting the dog, affectionately telling him, “You’re the coolest dog I’ve ever known. I love you, too. You’re a sweetheart.”
The burglar even gave the dog some unsolicited safety advice, saying, “Where’s your dad? Your dad should know not to leave the garage open.” In a bold move, he called out for the homeowner, shouting, “Dad!” before continuing to express his affection for the dog.
An unconventional theft
After spending several moments bonding with his new four-legged friend, the thief resumed his original plan.
He got back on the bike, preparing to leave, but not before sharing a final remark: “You got too much stuff. How do you have so much s**t in your house?”
The adorable dog appears to be irresistible to the man, causing him to pause his theft and give the dog a few pats.
The thief was then investigated by the police.
San Diego Police Department Lieutenant Brian Brecht commented on the bizarre encounter, stating, “The guy enters the garage, grabs the bike, and starts to walk out. He is about five feet outside the garage door when a golden retriever comes outside, into the garage, and follows the guy out. He immediately comes back in, parks the bike, and starts playing with the dog.”
According to the police, the suspect is a white male, around 30 years old.
He was wearing a blue and white hat, a grey shirt, and orange athletic shoes.
As of now, the police have not caught the burglar but are hoping that the footage might offer some leads.
“We are still looking for the subject. That’s why we advertised this on social media, but hopefully, we can get some tips from the public,” Brecht added.
Tips for homeowners: Preventing similar incidents
After the incident, Lieutenant Brian Brecht also offered some tips to the public on how to avoid a similar situation.
Brecht added: “Lock your house. If you have an alarm, activate that alarm and be aware of your surroundings. If you are going to leave for a while, let your neighbors know that you’re out of town.”
While this unusual theft has amused many, it also serves as a reminder to remain vigilant.
Securing your property is essential, even if you have a friendly pet at home.
