A mother from Indiana experienced an emotional rollercoaster after mistakenly holding a funeral for the wrong pet.
Cheryl Schmidt, 63, believed she had found her beloved seven-year-old cat, Kitty, dead on the side of the road.
However, the deceased animal turned out to be a rabbit.
Mother Bids farewell to her cat
Cheryl found what she thought was Kitty and organized a burial service in her backyard.
During the service, her husband delivered heartfelt parting words.
The family mourned, thinking they had lost their cherished pet.
After the burial, the family returned indoors, only to see Kitty looking at them through the window.
Their beloved feline was alive and well, leaving them confused.
In disbelief, they dug up the animal they had buried to confirm its identity.
A mother bids a stunning farewell to her cat after discovering the truth.
Upon visiting the vet, the family learned that they had buried a rabbit, not their cat. T
he rabbit had been hit by a car, prompting Cheryl to rebury it in her garden to give it a proper resting place.
Despite the initial distress, Cheryl’s husband, Steve, 63, and their children, Eric, 35, and Katie, 31, found humor in the situation.
Eric, a voiceover actor, recounted how his mother had borrowed a shovel from a neighbor and cried as she buried the rabbit.
‘” It was quite a ceremonial service for the cat.”
“She had to borrow a shovel from someone in the neighborhood and she was crying as she shoveled a random rabbit into the hole.”
“The vet offered to cremate the rabbit for my mum, but she said she already had a hole in the back garden so buried it again.” She said
Eric learned of the mix-up when his father texted him about the missing cat.
He later received another message stating that his mother had found Kitty dead.
“She put it in a plastic bag to avoid looking at it,” Eric explained.
Cheryl regretted not examining the animal more closely. “She was upset, so my sister called to comfort her,” Eric noted. He emphasized that the mistake was understandable, given the state of the rabbit after the accident.
The story of uncovering the mix-up quickly went viral.
Eric’s mother initially asked him to keep the incident private, but he shared the story on Twitter.
The post quickly gained traction a mong animals lover.
One person said: She needs new glasses!!
A second wrote: I was wondering if he was wearing a rabbit costume.
While a rthird commented: Lol major difference between the two ffs!
“It’s funny because people think it’s fake. We’d need to hire a forensic detective to dig it back up!” Eric joked.
This amusing yet poignant tale reminds us of the strong bond between pets and their owners.
It also highlights how even in moments of sadness, humor can emerge.
The Schmidts’ experience serves as a touching reminder of love, loss, and the occasional mix-up that life throws our way.
