Cats tend to become extremely focused on anything that captures their interest.

A bird or a flying bug just outside the window can excite them, causing them to reach out with their paws, and then be startled by a loud noise or strong wind, leading to a fall.

When a cat falls, two forces act upon it. The downward force of gravity depends on the acceleration due to gravity and the cat’s mass.

The other force is air resistance, which increases with the cat’s falling velocity and always opposes its motion.

The forces acting on the cat make it aware that it is falling. Instinctively, much like when faced with a threat, the cat will arch its back, puff up its fur, and extend its legs downward to prepare for landing.

Landing on their feet is a great option when cats fall from a relatively low height. Cats have evolved to have sharp claws that help them climb and cling to surfaces like wood and trees.

Therefore, when falling from greater heights, cats adopt a different strategy. They spread their limbs like a flying squirrel and land on their bellies.
