Last year, Toby, a once-matted and nearly unrecognizable dog, was rescued from a dumpster.
At the time, his fur was so entangled and overgrown that he barely resembled a dog and struggled to see or move.

Toby was abandoned by his previous owner and clearly suffered from abuse, as noted by his current caretaker, Callie Crowe.
“He was abandoned by his previous owner, and it was clear he had been abused when my uncle rescued him,” Crowe told The Dodo.
When her uncle fell ill, Crowe’s family stepped in to care for Toby.
Crowe’s family, experienced with dogs and driven by compassion, took swift action to help Toby.
The first crucial step was to give him a much-needed haircut.
The transformation began as they shaved away his matted fur.
“We were all in shock and almost didn’t believe it was the same dog. It was honestly a bit emotional to see him after his transformation,” Crowe shared.
Toby’s recovery from being rescued has turned him into a happy pet.
With his excess fur gone, Toby started to feel significantly better.
He could run freely and see clearly, marking the beginning of his emotional and physical recovery. Building trust with Toby was a gradual process.
“When he finally allowed himself to be petted, it was a sigh of relief,” Crowe recalled.
Initially, Toby only ate in the presence of Crowe’s father but eventually extended his comfort to everyone in the household.
He now loves to play fetch and eagerly greets visitors.
Though Toby still experiences occasional anxiety, his progress has been remarkable.
Crowe hopes for a reunion between Toby and her uncle once he regains his health.
“We got him cleaned up, but it was our uncle who saved Toby and gave him a second chance at life,” Crowe said. “Hopefully they can reunite soon.”
