Born in 2018 with an incredibly rare condition, Hope, an albino Pinkbelly Sideneck turtle, quickly captured the hearts of many around the world.

This tiny turtle’s heart was on the outside of her shell, a condition so rare that it lacks a formal name in the animal kingdom.

Despite the daunting odds against her survival, Hope defied expectations, living up to her name by inspiring hope in countless people.

A remarkable journey of hope after being adopted

Hope’s journey began when Mike Aquilina took her in from a friend who was a turtle breeder.

Recognizing the severity of her condition, Aquilina devoted himself to providing Hope with the best possible care.

He created a safe and controlled environment, ensuring that her heart remained protected.

She was kept isolated from other turtles to prevent any accidental injuries to her exposed heart.

“I keep her water extra clean, give her a basking area that is as soft as possible, and handle her as little as possible,” Aquilina shared with the Daily Mail in 2019. His meticulous care and dedication aimed to keep Hope’s deformity clean and her immune system strong.

Hope’s story becomes an inspiration worldwide

As Hope continued to thrive against the odds, Aquilina regularly shared updates about her progress, and her story quickly went viral.

People from all over the world drew inspiration from this little turtle’s courage and resilience.

Hope became a symbol of perseverance, encouraging others to push through their own challenges.

“Just a casual reminder that now is not forever. If you’re struggling, hang on tight,” one of Hope’s posts reads. “The joy is in the journey. Keep working hard and doing your best every day. The best is yet to come!”

For Aquilina, Hope’s presence was transformative. “She’s spreading hope while also giving me hope.

Hope has changed my life for the better in such a short amount of time,” he said.

Despite her fragile appearance, Hope was fearless, a trait that endeared her even more to those who followed her journey.

Despite efforts to save her, she passed away the next day.

Earlier in the year, Hope was hospitalized, which led Aquilina to start a GoFundMe campaign for her medical expenses. The campaign successfully raised $2,155.

Though she initially showed signs of improvement, her health took a sudden downturn, and she was gone.

“Hope was a part of my daily routine, my pride and joy, my purpose for six years of my life, and I will be lost without her,” Aquilina expressed in a heartfelt Instagram post. “I love you, Hope. I will miss you forever. I feel broken without you. Thank you for making my life worth living.”

Aquilina vowed to continue spreading the message of hope that his beloved turtle embodied.

“Together we were able to touch the world. I will try my best to keep going and to keep your spirit alive. Until we meet again. Swim in peace, baby girl.”….
