A kitten born with a unique appearance and two faces was reported to be covered in a blanket and not breathing, dying after four days.
A rare kitten born with two faces in northern Thailand has died after surviving for an extraordinary four days.
The kitten, named Tung Ngern (bag of silver) and Tung Tong (bag of gold), passed away on Wednesday morning, just days after its birth on Sunday in Lampang province.
A kitten born with two faces suddenly passed away.
The owner of the kitten, who was born with two faces, was heartbroken after its sudden passing just four days later.
The kitten’s devastated owner shared the heartbreaking news on social media.
He wrote, “Little Tung and Ngern Tung Tong has died, everyone. She has left this world.”
He described finding the kitten struggling to breathe at 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
Despite covering it with a blanket, by 5:30 a.m., the kitten had passed away.
The owner expressed his sorrow, saying, “You don’t need to suffer. Sleep well, Little One. We did everything we could.”
The kitten’s owner made an effort to save the two-faced cat but failed
The owner, Anuwat, initially feared for the kitten’s survival after seeing it struggle during birth.
The two-faced kitten was born after a Caesarean section at a local animal hospital in Hang Chat, where vets removed the kitten.
Despite his fears, Anuwat spent sleepless nights caring for the kitten, even helping it drink milk from both mouths.
He was amazed at how the kitten continued to fight for its life.
Finnny, Tung Ngern, and Tung Tong died after defying the odds for four days, leaving Anuwat in regret.
Rare survival of Janus cats
Kittens born with two faces, also known as Janus cats after the Roman god Janus, are incredibly rare.
These kittens often don’t survive more than a few hours due to their severe congenital abnormalities. Janus cats can have two faces, two mouths, and two noses, which complicates their ability to thrive.
Tung Ngern and Tung Tong, however, fought for survival, lasting an impressive four days.
While Janus cats rarely live long lives, there are exceptions.
In 1999, a two-faced kitten named Frank and Louie lived for an astonishing 15 years in Massachusetts, eventually setting a Guinness World Record for the longest-lived Janus cat.
This rare survival offers a glimmer of hope for those caring for these unusual felines.
Nanny McPhee: Another rare cat with two noses
If Tung Ngern and Tung Tong are two-faced cats, Nanny McPhee also has a unique appearance with two noses.
In a similar vein, a cat named Nanny McPhee in the U.K. made headlines for having two noses.
Staff and volunteers at Cats Protection’s Warrington Adoption Centre were initially puzzled by a four-year-old cat named Nanny McPhee.
They thought she had an unusually large nose. However, a check-up by the center’s vet revealed that Nanny McPhee has not one, but two noses, caused by a rare congenital abnormality.
Despite her unusual appearance, she suffers no ill effects from having two noses. This double-nose condition is a first for the Cats Protection team, according to Senior Field Veterinary Officer Fiona Brockbank.
The black-and-white cat was named Nanny McPhee after the fictional character known for her famously deformed nose. Nanny McPhee’s condition is rare, but it hasn’t affected her ability to live a happy and healthy life.
