A loyal dog named Hei Zi has been waiting for its owner’s return for over three years after being abandoned in Xi’an, China.
The dog’s heartbreaking story has captivated the local community, as well as animal lovers worldwide.

Hei Zi, a Plott Hound, was abandoned by its owner in 2017 when the owner, a Korean expat, moved back to South Korea.
The loyal dog has been waiting day and night in the residential complex, refusing to leave the place it once called home.
According to a neighbor, Wang Huili, the dog spends its days near a statue in the center of the estate.
It appears at the same times each day, seemingly waiting for its owner to return.
Local residents describe Hei Zi as a gentle and sensitive dog.
Despite being abandoned, the dog never causes trouble and does not engage in fights with other animals.
It has even become a symbol of loyalty in the community, as one girl remarked, “This dog is very loyal. It has waited for its owner in this estate all these years since [the owner] left.”
Hei Zi received support and care from the community.
Although some neighbors complained about the stray dog to authorities, many in the residential area have come together to care for Hei Zi.
Locals have built a small tent for the loyal dog in a bamboo patch, offering it food and shelter.
Wang explained, “We would give meat or other food we bought to Hei Zi instead of our own dogs.” The community’s compassion has fostered a bond between neighbors, united in their care for Hei Zi.
In addition to providing food and shelter, animal lovers in the estate have donated money to cover Hei Zi’s medical expenses.
Last year, residents collected 5,000 yuan (£568) to have parasites removed from the dog.
They now plan to arrange another check-up to ensure Hei Zi’s continued health.
One neighbor, Xie, shared that residents are prepared to complete all necessary paperwork to give Hei Zi a pet license, allowing it to live peacefully in the estate.

The local community is now working to find a permanent home for the loyal dog.

Vaani shared, “We were all crying and hugging our dog,” expressing relief and joy at being reunited with her loyal companion.
