The Lykoi is nicknamed the “werewolf of the cat family” due to its unique appearance, which is a combination of several different cat breeds.

At first glance, Lykoi cats resemble hairless Sphynx cats with the large round eyes of American Shorthairs, but they also have a face reminiscent of the werewolf character Wolverine.

This “one-of-a-kind” breed results from a genetic mutation in American Shorthair cats.

The mutation prevents Lykoi cats from developing hair normally, resulting in hairless areas around their eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.

Additionally, the remaining fur on their bodies grows in a pattern similar to that of a wolf.

Though their appearance may seem somewhat frightening at first, werewolf cats are very friendly, playful, and loyal to their owners, possessing the true temperament of a hunting dog.

Their quirky looks and unique personality make this breed particularly rare and expensive, and not everyone can afford to buy one.

Simply put, the number of Lykoi cats in the world today is very low.

Fern, a Lykoi cat, was surrendered to Cats Protection in Warrington, Cheshire, after her previous owner had to enter care. She is thought to be one of only 200 Lykoi cats in the world, making her exceptionally rare.

Lykoi cats are known as “werewolf cats” due to their unique fur pattern, a mix of hairless and hairy patches.

When sitting in certain positions, their fur can poof up, giving them an even more werewolf-like appearance.

Fern faced health issues

Fern was treated for an ear infection when she first arrived, which has since cleared up.

She also has a small cyst on her head, which the vet has deemed not a concern.

Since Cats Protection posted about Fern on their Facebook page, the post has been flooded with love heart face emojis and supportive comments.

People are expressing their admiration for Fern and their interest in adopting her.
