David Foster spotted a starving dog during his trip to the Amazon
Last fall, David Foster embarked on an adventure to the Amazon rainforest.
He looked forward to exploring the lush jungles and sailing to the picturesque beaches along the coast.
However, little did he know that his journey would lead him to a desperate animal in need of help.
While sailing on a beautiful day, Foster and his companions decided to stop at a remote beach.
As he scanned the horizon, he spotted a lone dog in the distance. Confused, he wondered why a dog would be alone in such an isolated location.
“I thought, ‘Why is she out here? It seems a bit remote,’” Foster recounted. He called out to the dog, hoping she belonged to other people on the beach. To his relief, she came running toward him, but he quickly realized how dire her situation was.
David Foster spotted starving dog in terrible condition
According to David, the starving dog, Negrita, was in horrific shape.
She was covered in fleas and ticks, her ears were bloodied and torn, and her thin black fur was patchy, revealing bruises on her emaciated body.
Foster’s heart sank as he observed the vultures circling above her.
“It looked as if someone had beaten her,” he said with deep concern. “She was so close to death. She was wagging her tail and crying at the same time.”
Negrita then was rescued and received rehabilitation treatment.
Foster understood that Negrita could not survive in her current situation. He believed that Negrita would face certain death if he left, and she needed help.
“She was not just a stray dog. She was sailed out and left there,” He said.
Foster offered Negrita some food and lifted her onto his boat.
Despite her injuries, she looked relieved to be rescued, and Foster felt a strong connection to the vulnerable creature.
Then, Foster took Negrita to a veterinarian who could help her.
Negrita received care for her flea and tick infestation, and her wounds were cleaned and dressed.
Fortunately, she did not have any broken bones or serious internal injuries.
As the days passed, Negrita began to regain her strength, and her gentle personality emerged. She followed Foster around the boat, always wagging her tail and seeking affection from her new friend.
A new home for Negrita
Foster made a life-changing decision: he wanted to bring Negrita back to the UK.
He operates a charity called PlayforStrays, which provides toys to abandoned pets worldwide.
Foster had previously visited a shelter in São Paulo, Brazil, called Natureza em Forma, and he felt they could help him care for Negrita.
He contacted Tamis, a generous woman at the shelter, who immediately agreed to foster Negrita.
Foster shared Negrita’s story with his supporters, and soon, people from all over the world began to contribute.
Canto da Terra, another Brazilian animal rescue group, also stepped in to provide food for Negrita during her time at the foster home.
Finally, at the end of March, Negrita’s long-awaited homecoming arrived.
After numerous long flights and various logistical challenges, she was finally reunited with Foster. He was overjoyed to see his “Amazon girl” back with him after so many months apart.
Initially, Negrita was scared during her transition to her new home. However, she quickly settled in wonderfully as a cherished member of the family
Foster noticed that her toys played a significant role in helping her feel comfortable and secure.
“She loves her toys,” he said, smiling. “She has one little teddy bear I sent her at Christmas time, and it’s like her baby. She carries it gently and looks after it very well. It’s the only one she won’t destroy.”
