Since his election, Donald Trump could become the first US President in 130 years not to have a pet dog in the White House.
Most US Presidents have had at least one pet dog. For example, former President Obama had two Portuguese water dogs named Sunny and Bo, former President George W Bush had two terrier and beagle puppies, and former President Clinton had a labrador puppy named Buddy.
Previously, the media reported that Mr. Trump might adopt a goldendoodle puppy named Patton. The puppy is being raised by Mr. Trump’s friend Lois Pope.
However, Ms. Pope later refused to give Patton to Mr. Trump and he currently has no plans to keep any animals.
According to the Independent, the last president not to own a dog was William McKinley, the 25th president, who served from 1897 to 1901, and who died of gangrene a year after a failed assassination attempt.
According to the Presidential Pet Museum, McKinley did not own a dog but kept many cats, roosters and parrots.
According to the Independent, the first presidents to occupy the White House often kept tiger cubs, horses, bears, parrots, even silkworms and crocodiles. Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, did not own a dog during both terms but did own a mockingbird and two bear cubs.
