A perfect match: Gnocchi and Johanna
Fortunately, some people are willing to open their hearts to older pets. Recently, a senior dog found his forever home with an even more senior woman.
This created a heartwarming story of companionship.
An 11-year-old Chihuahua mixed-breed named Gnocchi was rescued from a hoarding situation along with 21 other dogs.
He was taken in by Muttsville Senior Dog Rescue. This shelter is dedicated to finding homes for older dogs.
Adopting Gnocchi was challenging.

Despite these obstacles, Gnocchi soon found his perfect match in 100-year-old Johanna Carrington.
Johanna had recently lost her previous pet, Rocky. She wanted to adopt another dog.
Her family feared that her age might prevent her from being allowed to adopt.
However, a neighbor connected her with Muttsville. Then the shelter recognized that she could be the perfect companion for Gnocchi.
The bond between Gnocchi and Johanna is strong.
When Gnocchi visited Johanna’s home, it was clear they were meant to be together.
Johanna recounted, “He came to the house like he’d been here before. It was remarkable. He saw me sitting on my chair, jumped up on me, and sat on my lap. He made himself very, very comfortable. He was just our baby right away.”
Renamed “Gucci,” the little dog has settled into his new home. Johanna has provided him with many toys, and they are enjoying their time together.
This match is part of Muttsville’s “Seniors for Seniors” program, which highlights the benefits that dogs can bring to senior citizens and how older pets can be the perfect match for them.

Johanna isn’t caring for Gucci alone. She has a caregiver who takes Gucci on daily walks.
She also gets help from her daughter, Debbie Carrington, 64, who has noticed a positive change since Gucci’s arrival. “After she lost her other dog, it was kind of sad here. It was quiet and sad, and then Gucci brought joy into the house.”

Johanna has found a companion to brighten her life. Johanna said, “Animals bring so much happiness in our home. It’s unbelievable. I just love him.”
